Glock 17 Gen 6 in South Africa: Price, Specs & Review

The Glock 17 has been the reference full-size 9mm for more than 40 years, and for 2026 Glock has released a sixth generation of it. If you're thinking of buying a G17 Gen 6 in South Africa, or wondering whether it's worth upgrading from your Gen 4 or Gen 5, this guide covers what actually changed, what it costs here, and how to get one legally.

    Key takeaways

    • The Gen 6 is the biggest change to the Glock in years: a new grip shape, a flat-faced trigger, a new optics mount and a full Picatinny rail.
    • It's still a 9×19 mm pistol with a 17-round magazine and the same Safe Action system.
    • SA dealers advertised new G17 Gen 6 pistols at roughly R16,800 to R18,200 in October 2026.
    • It takes existing Glock 17 magazines.
    • The licensing process is the same as for any handgun: competency certificate, SAPS 271, then collection from a dealer.

What's new on the Glock 17 Gen 6

    Ergonomics

The grip is no longer the classic Glock "brick". Glock added a palm swell, an enlarged beavertail for a higher grip, a textured thumb rest on the frame (a factory "gas pedal"), and new RTF6 texture that wraps further up the frame. The trigger guard has a deeper undercut, the trigger reach is shorter, and two backstrap sizes are included. Most reviewers say the grip is the change you notice first.

    Flat-faced trigger

Every Gen 6 has a flat-faced trigger for more consistent finger placement. The internals still use Glock's Safe Action system with three passive safeties, and Glock lists the trigger pull at about 26 N.

    Optic Ready System

Instead of the Gen 5 MOS plates that the optic screws into, the Gen 6 uses a new Optic Ready System. A polymer adapter plate locates the red dot, and the optic's screws go directly into the slide, which makes it more solid. Three plates come in the box.

    Rail, slide and controls

The dust cover now has a full MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail, so weapon lights mount without adapter keys. Slide serrations are cut deeper, the ambidextrous slide stop is reshaped with a bigger raised border to prevent accidental activation, and the Glock Marksman Barrel and nDLC finish carry over from Gen 5.

Should you upgrade? If you shoot with a red dot, or the old Glock grip never suited your hand, the Gen 6 is a real improvement. If your Gen 5 already works for you, there's no urgent reason to change. It's still a very good pistol and sells easily on the second-hand market.

    Glock 17 Gen 6 vs Glock 19 Gen 6

The G17 is the full-size model: it has a longer sight radius, two extra rounds and is a little softer to shoot, which makes it a favourite for range use, IDPA and home defence. The Glock 19 Gen 6 is 17 mm shorter and 11 mm lower, which is why it's the more popular carry pistol in SA. Both have the same Gen 6 features, and in October 2026 they were priced about the same here.

Glock 17 Gen 6 price in South Africa

In October 2026, South African dealers advertised new Glock 17 Gen 6 pistols at roughly R16,800 to R18,200, including VAT. Licensing, a safe, a holster and a competency course come on top of that. Second-hand Gen 6 pistols are still scarce. Older generations are cheaper: you can browse used Glocks in Guns & Firearms on Geebo or read our Glock for sale buyer's guide.

Buying a used Glock 17: checklist

    • Confirm the generation. Gen 6 has the palm swell, thumb rest and flat trigger; Gen 5 has no finger grooves and a curved trigger; Gen 4 has finger grooves.
    • Check that the serial number matches the seller's licence. Do this at the dealer.
    • Look for wear on the barrel crown and the locking block, and cracks around the rail.
    • Ask how many magazines and backstraps are included, and whether it comes with the optic plates.
    • Do a function check at the dealer before money changes hands.

How to buy one legally in South Africa

A Gen 6 is a handgun like any other under the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000, so the process is the same whether you buy new from a shop or second-hand off a classified ad:

    1. Competency. Complete an accredited handgun course and get your SAPS competency certificate.
    2. Choose your section. Most people buy a Glock for self-defence under Section 13. Dedicated sport shooters can apply under Section 16 through their accredited association.
    3. Book the pistol in. The dealer (or the private seller, through a dealer) holds the specific firearm and gives you its details.
    4. Apply. Submit your SAPS 271 with motivation, safe inspection, ID, proof of address and fingerprints to your local DFO.
    5. Collect. Once the licence is approved, the dealer releases the pistol to you. Approval often takes several months.

Never pay a private seller who wants to courier the pistol, skip the dealer or "sort out the paperwork later". Read our full legal buy & sell guide and safety tips.

    Frequently asked questions

When was the Glock 17 Gen 6 released?

Glock announced the Gen 6 line, including the G17, G19, G45 and G49 in 9mm, for 2026. South African dealers had stock by around the middle of the year.

How much is a Glock 17 Gen 6 in South Africa?

In October 2026, SA dealers advertised new ones at about R16,800 to R18,200 including VAT. Prices change, so check with your dealer.

Yes. The Gen 6 G17 takes standard 17-round Glock 17 magazines.

Do old Glock holsters fit the Gen 6?

What licence do I need for a Glock 17?
