Caravans for Sale in South Africa: New vs Second-Hand

Rising hotel prices have made caravanning popular again. A good second-hand caravan can give you years of affordable holidays, but a damp, badly repaired one is an expensive mistake.

    New vs second-hand

New caravans in SA now often cost R400 000 and up. Well-kept second-hand Sprite, Jurgens and Gypsey models trade for a fraction of that, and they hold their value well when looked after.

    The big checks

    • Damp: press the walls around the windows and corners, and look for soft spots or stains. Damp is the number-one caravan killer.
    • Chassis and tow hitch: look for rust, and check that the coupling and jockey wheel are sound.
    • Tyres: check the date code. Tyres older than about six years should be replaced, whatever the tread.
    • Gas and electrics: ask for a gas certificate and test every plug and light.

    Can your vehicle tow it?

Check your vehicle's licence disc for its maximum towing mass, and compare it with the caravan's GVM. Heavier caravans may need a code EB driver's licence. Bakkies such as the Hilux and Ranger are popular tow vehicles. See our bakkie buying guide.

    Frequently asked questions

Do caravans need a licence in South Africa?

Yes. Caravans are trailers and must be registered, licensed and roadworthy when ownership changes.

What is a good first caravan?

A light, two- to four-berth model from a known brand, with a dry interior and recent tyres, is the easiest to start with.
